"At Ease" is a temporary installation (1 year) for the gatehouse entry point to Warren G. Magnuson Park. Located at primary threshold between the park and surrounding neighborhood, the gatehouse was once manned and operated as a security checkpoint for the Sand Point Naval Air Station. It now serves as the main entrance to Magnuson Park, yet has stood neglected, empty, and vandalized. For this reason, I felt a strong imperative to reinstate this landmark as work of contemporary art and received permission from the park administration to do so. Thank you to 4Culture for funding this project.

The title was chosen to honor the park's military past, complex present, and ongoing commitment to balance human wants and environmental needs. "At Ease" encourages one to relax and connect with Magnuson Park though all states of development and transition.

a new series of drawings is underway...in response to a performance by the kronos quartet. the concert was titled "sun rings". it was commissioned by NASA. the quartet collaborated with terry riley and the team was given access to the entire NASA archives of sights, sounds, data and text to tease out a composition. it was a really stunning work in ten movements.

box the compass

“Boxing the Compass” is the action of reciting the 32 principal compass points in clockwise order. Practiced throughout maritime history, it is a way to refer to a heading without having to memorize angles or resort to computing. 32 voices are arranged in the round, reciting all points of the compass, softly encircling those that enter the space. Field recordings from coastal and inland waters provide an ambient backdrop. Columns of light serve as anchor points from which sounds will gently emanate. Attention is drawn to the relationship between navigation, intuition, and the human need to explore. Voices reveal our desire to set a course, water and light remind us to look and feel.
